my kids

all three of them.

400 ISO film – developed in my basement.

I’ll confess, I forgot to squeegee them before they dried so thus the waterspots.

found and loved

found this in the old folders and loved it – wanted to share it with you guys.

can I confess?

I figure I can here. It’s my place right?

I’m tired.

I’m so tired.

I’m tired of this crowded market of amazing photographers. Utah has so many incredible photographers, but from a business standpoint it’s a little exhausting.

If you want me to take your pictures, I’ll be happy to. But I’m no businesswoman. And I’m sure not a competitor. I just really love taking pictures.

and I really just want to take pictures that I love. And explore things that I can do with my camera.

So i’m announcing a resolution today. I’ve always done this, but I’m going to try to be brave and do it more — from now on I post what I like. Not just posting things that make me look cool as a photographer. Not just things that make me look like you might want to hire me or something.

Things like this –

things that are straight out of the camera and virgin and untouched in photoshop. Naked, if you will.

That’s my confession for today.

Now off to go try to wrangle a kid and clear one little spot where I can sit in this house.

ETA – I ran upstairs and told David of my new resolution and he looked at me and I realized that I go through this exact process about every 6 months. Maybe it’s like a snake shedding its skin…

scanned film part 2

SO i got my film scanner in the mail today.

Be still my heart.

Scanned the film I developed the other day for reals and now that my ducks are in a row i’ll be shooting and developing more often.

I get dizzy with excitement just thinking about it.

Have much tweaking on the processing so the development will be better but overall, considering it was double exposed film and developed with coffee and my first….i’m pretty pleased.

Some of the roll was double exposed from this past Stadium of Fire 4th of July show (the Jonas Bros came to sing – the little heartthrobbers) – no idea how it happened but i like some of the results.

love this one – - it’s Asher and the Jonas Brothers Concert. It seems like a wonderful juxtaposition.

FILM – guerilla style

tonight. i knocked one off the bucket list.

I’ve wanted to develop film every since I dated a photographer in high school. Tonight I did it.

I developed my first roll in my modified bathroom in our basement using Caffenol C or Coffee as a developer.

Developed for about 14 minutes in the coffee and then rinsed and fixed and rinsed.

Then I scanned the developed negs using a pretty ghetto method (I laid the negs on the flatbed scanner and then laid three pieces of white copy paper over them and back-lit them with a lamp)

This is what I got. Just a couple shots to show here…i’ll scan the rest later.

These started out as 400 ISO color film but the processing kills the color and adds grain.

old friends

we have these old friends – my parents and they were friends back when I was born in Chicago.

They’re really cool and really artsy. Back in the 70’s they had Mies Van Der Rohe chairs in their apartment – which is cool.

And they had really cool kids who grew up to have cool families.

I was over the moon when they asked me to shoot their family reunion this past Christmas.

family

I never met my grandma Starr – she died before I was born, but I’ve been getting to know her lately through scanning photos of her and reading about her life in bits and peices. And the photos just take my breath away.

I can’t tell you how much I adore getting to know these people, MY people even though it’s posthumously.

“We know so little of our connection, anyway, as people marry and move on and you don’t never hear from them again. It’s like in all our blood ties of cousins and aunts and uncles and ancestors and descendants we don’t see but those near us. Why children, your children will have children I will never know, and their children’s children will never have heard of me. No use to deny it. Looking backwards I don’t know more than my Grandmammy and Granddaddy on either side, and all the rest is just a name here, a fact there, a rumor. All the people stretching back two or three generations to Pennsylvania and Wales, and back to Adam, are just lost in the fog and dust. We are isolated in the little clearing of now and all the rest is tangled woods and thickets nobody much remembers. I always said it’s how you enjoy that little opening in the wilderness that counts. That’s all you have a chance to do. That’s why I’m telling you this story.”

i scrapbook – i really do

i keep a moleskine notebook of all my polaroids – and i try to take polaroids of important events and times. and many not – so – important events.

i like my ’scrapbooks’ to stay really simple and minimal.

here are a few pictures.

this is the notebook made for me by Denki Ai on etsy

and here are some pages. as you know by now, i don’t like writing all that much – so it’s a picture book more than anything.

driving home from taking the kids to school

i keep my old RebelXT in the car for when I drive. I always see the prettiest things.

these were from last week…
